Trust me when I say this will be an important purchase for anyone looking to take the ASVAB. I only had three days notice to get ready for the test and felt nervous about it. But after reading through the book over those few days, I felt confident going in. I ended up scoring a 94 AFQT score and qualified for any job I wanted. Not only will this book give you some basic knowledge you'll need to complete subtests you're unfamiliar with, it will also give you tips and methods on how to best attack questions you don't know how to answer. Would definitely recommend this to anyone preparing for the ASVAB.
A lot of people see the “CAT” term attached to the ASVAB test when they first start looking into the test and aren’t sure what that stands for. This term is an acronym and it stands for “Computerized Adaptive Test”. There are three different versions of the ASVAB test. The CAT is available at military processing stations for enlisting soldiers. The pencil and paper (also known as the P&P or S-ASVAB) version of the test is available for high school and college students who may not actually enlist. The third type of ASVAB test is the MET-ASVAB, or Mobile Examination Test, which is available only for enlisted soldiers at mobile testing centers (this test is also done with paper and pencil).

The subject reviews cover all of the information you will be expected to know on the actual test, from arithmetic and word knowledge to paragraph comprehension and more advanced mathematical topics. There’s only one practice test included, but its formatted like an actual exam to give you an authentic mock test day experience.
The way to prepare for this exam is study hard and then quiz yourself with plenty of practice ASVAB tests. Remember that the exam is identical for all branches, so an Army ASVAB practice test is exactly the same as an ASVAB practice test for the Navy. The most important components of the test are the ones that count towards the Armed Services Qualifications Test, or AFQT. These sections are Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Math Knowledge. For tips and strategies for success on these questions, be sure to review our article on ASVAB Test Prep.

I studied for the ASVAB for two week straight using the ASVAB for Dummies book. Since I was enlisting in the Air Force, and I wanted to get into RF Systems or Cyber Transport support, I needed a hella high score in science, math, and electronics. I read every section, but I focused on the math, science, and electronics sections. I felt that the practice tests were harder than the questions on the actual ASVAB at MEPS. This was cool, because I felt like I could answer most of the ASVAB questions okay. The ASVAB I took at MEPS was on a computer, so it was easier than doing the ASVAB on paper. Some of my friends didn't study for the ASVAB, so they were feeling kinda depressed after the test. After the ASVAB, I was exhausted, because it took me four hours. I received my score immediately after I completed the test. I got a 95 percentile out of 99. I was hella happy!!! I immediately called my recruiter to tell him how I scored.

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a timed multi-aptitude test developed and maintained by the Department of Defense. The test is given at more than 13,000 schools and Military Entrance Processing Stations nationwide and is used to determine the branch of service and career field where a candidate would most excel. If you’re one of the more than one million people a year preparing to take the test, this is your one-stop resource to ensure you perform your very best.

As former Secretary of State for Defense Donald Rumsfeld once famously said, “There are known knowns. There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say; there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don't know.” If you want to ace the ASVAB, you need to identify your personal unknown unknowns — and this is precisely what Peterson’s guide is uniquely qualified to help you do. This book begins with the absolute best diagnostic test of any review book, which will help you hone in on exactly what you need to focus your studying efforts on. This book also is one of the wordiest, meaning every topic you’ll encounter on test day, and more is sure to show up inside. In addition to the great diagnostic test and four full-length practice tests, the guide includes a full overview of military positions you’ll be qualified for based on your score for extra incentive to do your best.

In order to take the ASVAB at a MEPS for enlistment purposes, an individual will need to speak with a recruiter and schedule a time to take the test. ASVAB testing at a MEPS is self-paced and taken on a computer, and it may be retaken after a one-month waiting period.  Entitled the CAT-ASVAB, the test is adaptive – meaning it adapts to your ability level.
I glanced through this book as well as a few others at a book store. This book had four practice tests, whereas most others only had three. I liked that, so I bought it. However, once I started to take the tests and read the review material, I noticed that this book has a deplorable number of mistakes. I DO NOT recommend buying this book unless you are trying to play a cruel joke on someone who is trying to join the military.
Focusing Your Study - As you take more and more sample tests you begin to get a feel for the topics that you know well and the areas that you are weak on.  Many students waste a lot of valuable study time by reviewing material that they are good at (often because it is easier or makes them feel better).  The most effective way to study is to concentrate on the areas that you need help on.
For almost a century, the U.S. military has been a pioneer in the field of using aptitude tests to evaluate an individual’s potential for service. The organization also uses the test to determine aptitude for various military occupational specialties (MOS). The use of aptitude tests began during World War I. While the group-administered Army Alpha test measured verbal and numerical ability as well as general knowledge, the Army Beta test was used to evaluate illiterate, unschooled and non-English speaking volunteers and draftees. The Army and Navy General Classifications Tests replaced the Alpha and Beta tests as a means to measure cognitive ability during World War II. The results of these tests, as well as additional classification exams, were used to assign recruits to a particular MOS.
