In the 1950s, the military adopted a single exam known as the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). Used as a screening tool, the AFQT measured a recruit’s ability to absorb military training and their future potential. It was supplemented by service-specific battery tests for the purposes of MOS classification. In 1972, the Department of Defense determined that all services should use one exam for screening and assigning individuals to an MOS. The AFQT was phased out over a two-year period in favor of the current Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test.
It's important to understand the difference between the ASVAB Standard Scores, and the ASVAB AFQT score. Test takers will receive a separate score for each of the nine sections on the ASVAB. These scores are known as Standard Scores. A Standard Score is used to determine how the test taker compares to the "average" 18-23 year old American on that part of the ASVAB. Not long ago, a large number of people in this age group were given the tests, and these results are the benchmark for Standard Scores. Around half the people in this age group will score a 50 or higher, and about 16% will score a 60 or higher. In other words, the scoring is based on a standard bell curve distribution. Standard Scores are very important when it comes to determining which military job a person will be assigned to.

This was an excellent study guide for the ASVAB! I had graduated high school over 7 years ago so being able to brush up on my algebra and geometry was extremely helpful. It was an easy read and with 4 or 5 practice tests I felt prepared when the day to take the test actually came. I wasn't blindsided by any of the questions because the format was so similar to this book.
The ASVAB is a timed test that measures your skills in a number of different areas. You complete questions that reveal your skills in paragraph comprehension, word knowledge, arithmetic reasoning and mathematics knowledge. These are basic skills that you will need as a member of the U.S. military. The score you receive on the ASVAB is factored into your Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT) score. This score is used to figure out whether you qualify to enlist in the armed services.

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP) , takes approximately three hours, covers eight subjects and is composed of 200 questions. The ASVAB CEP is currently a pen and paper test. If it is offered by their school, high school students can take the ASVAB CEP test in grades 10, 11 and 12. They can only take it at the high school they attend, unless special arrangements are made.
If you were a good student in school, you are probably competent in basic math, science, vocabulary and paragraph analysis. But mechanical skills? That’s not something you use every day. Thankfully, Mometrix’s ASVAB study guide has one of the most challenging and thorough overviews of the mechanical knowledge you’ll need for the test. Inside, you’ll find an in-depth review of different essential topics, including an entire section devoted to assembling objects. You’ll also learn the basic physics you need to master subjects such as calculating velocity, friction and the movement of fluids. If you want a more specific explanation of a concept in the book, you can scan the video code and pull up a more advanced tutorial in Mometrix Academy. Another helpful inclusion is a review book that reminds you of common test anxieties and how to overcome them.

Focusing Your Study - As you take more and more sample tests you begin to get a feel for the topics that you know well and the areas that you are weak on.  Many students waste a lot of valuable study time by reviewing material that they are good at (often because it is easier or makes them feel better).  The most effective way to study is to concentrate on the areas that you need help on.
This will show you exactly what your weak areas are, and where you need to devote more study time. Ask yourself why each of these questions gave you trouble. Was it because you didn’t understand the material? Was it because you didn’t remember the vocabulary? Do you need more repetitions on this type of question to build speed and confidence? Dig into those questions and figure out how you can strengthen your weak areas as you go back to review the material.
If what you are looking for in an ASVAB book is merely a ton of practice questions, this might not be the book for you, though it does have plenty of those inside. Instead, the main selling point of this book is the comprehensive study method and plan that decreases the amount of time you have to spend behind a desk and increases your comprehension and retention. Built in consultation with military and education experts alike, Spire proposes a 30-day study calendar that tells you when to study what topics for maximum retention. All of the topics are covered in-depth, and their visual outlines in each section will help the concepts stick. This is one of the few books that come with a guarantee that you’ll pass your ASVAB!
After adopting the test in 1976 the test became a way of indicating whether or not an individual was 100% qualified to serve. As previously mentioned this aptitude test has a colorful history. That is because it underwent a dramatic change in 2002 and another dramatic change in 2004. The change that occurred in 2002 expanded the categories of the test and the overall difficulty. This can be seen by the addition of all of the diverse categories below:
