It's important to understand the difference between the ASVAB Standard Scores, and the ASVAB AFQT score. Test takers will receive a separate score for each of the nine sections on the ASVAB. These scores are known as Standard Scores. A Standard Score is used to determine how the test taker compares to the "average" 18-23 year old American on that part of the ASVAB. Not long ago, a large number of people in this age group were given the tests, and these results are the benchmark for Standard Scores. Around half the people in this age group will score a 50 or higher, and about 16% will score a 60 or higher. In other words, the scoring is based on a standard bell curve distribution. Standard Scores are very important when it comes to determining which military job a person will be assigned to.
To enlist in the United States armed forces, you must take an entrance examination called the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The ASVAB test helps the military determine your qualifications for enlistment. The ASVAB first appeared in 1968. By 1976 it was required by all branches of the military. The test was completely redone in 2002.

The ASVAB was created in 1968. By 1976, all branches of the military began using this test. In 2002, the test underwent many revisions, but its main goal of gauging a person’s basic skills remained the same. Today, there is a computerized version of the test as well as a written version. The Department of Defense developed this test and it’s taken by students in thousands of schools across the country. It is also given at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS).

REA’s ASVAB TestWare combines a realistic test environment with the most powerful scoring analysis and diagnostic tools available. With every ASVAB practice test you take, you’ll gain knowledge and confidence for the real exam. Automatic scoring and instant reports help you zero in on the topics and types of ASVAB questions that give you trouble now, so you’ll succeed when it counts!
There is another ASVAB score that's equally important, if not more so, because it is the score that determines if a person is eligible for military service. It's the Armed Forces Qualification Test score, or AFQT score. This score is calculated from only four of the nine Standard Scores on the ASVAB - Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), and Word Knowledge (WK). First, the WK and PC scores are added together, then the sum is doubled. This is known as the Verbal Expression (VE) score. The VE, MK, and AR scores are then added together, and the sum is the AFQT. This score is a straight percentile measure, expressed as a number from 1-99. The number is the percentage of people who scored lower than the test taker. For example, if a person receives an AFQT score of 63, that means that he did better on the test than 63% of the people who have taken it.

Don’t be fooled by the appearance of the low numbers, the algorithm that computes the AFQT is very sophisticated. Just because your ASVAB score is 40 doesn’t mean that you only got 40% of the questions correct, it could simply mean that you lack strength in one area, but succeed with high praise in another. Your ASVAB score is only a means by which you are categorized for available positions; it is by no means a measure of intelligence.
The General Science section of the test covers earth, space, and physical and life sciences. Because science is such a vast and dynamic topic, focus your study on basic principles. This gives you a good foundation to work through any question that is asked of you. Typical questions may include: “Why is air less dense than water?” or “How do you convert Celsius temperature to Fahrenheit?” The CAT-ASVAB test asks 16 questions in 8 minutes, while the pencil-and-paper version asks 25 questions in 11 minutes.
If you look at more than one test in this book, you'll notice something--they are all basically the same, and have many of the same questions, just with different numbers. There's always a family of (number of people), with (number of dinner rolls), and the book asks how many rolls each family member will have to eat if they're split evenly. This question, while too easy for the arithmetic reasoning section in the first place, appears in every single test! Some of the paragraphs in the paragraph comprehension sections are repeated word for word, with a slight difference in question (that usually still doesn't make sense or has the incorrect answer listed as correct.)
Wow, it changed my whole perspective on what was going to be on the actual test. A lot of the things in the practice test were things I really didn't know, especially in the mechanical and electronics knowledge. Of course, those sections don't exactly count unless you're pursuing a job in those fields, but a lot of the knowledge in the practice tests is very useful. Having not taken a mathematics course for awhile, it was good to retest my abilities on their problems. Whether or not you really want to score high on your ASVAB, I would suggest it just for keeping you sharp.

Memorizar el orden de las operaciones matemáticas. Comenzar a trabajar todo entre paréntesis. A continuación, pasar a exponentes. A continuación, realice ninguna multiplicación y división.

The ASVAB test can be taken at your school or a MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Stations) or MET (Mobile Examination Test) sites.  When the ASVAB is administered at your school, it is usually part of the Student Testing Program or Career Exploration Program.  When the ASVAB is given at MEPS or MET sites, it is part of the Enlistment Testing Program.  The ASVAB test content is the same no matter where you take it, except that you will not have to take the Assembling Objects test if you take the test at your school (as part of the Student Testing Program).  When you take the test in the Student Testing Program you will receive three composite scores (Verbal Skills, Math Skills, and Science and Technical Skills).  When you take the ASVAB as part of the Enlistment Testing Program, you will receive an AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) score and Service composite scores.  These scores are used for assigning your military job.

Candidates taking the ASVAB are given a AFQT (Armed Forces Qualifying Test) score which is simply a combination of your scores from four tests (Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension). This AFQT score is represented as a percentile (from 1-99) which depicts how well you scored compared to other test takers. For example, if your score is a 57, this means that you scored better than 57% of the other test takers. The AFQT score is used to determine whether you are qualified to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces.

One of the best perks of this book is the “cheat sheets” at the end of each subsection that provide an excellent overview of the topics and equations you’ll need to master to do well on that area. You’ll also find an in-depth guide to how the ASVAB is scored and what to expect once you’re in the test room on exam day. There are thousands of practice questions inside, as well as seven online practice exams.

Now, one page over while showing how to multiply decimals, which is the same thing, they fail to do this and obtain a wrong answer. I'm a laid back guy and all, but I mean come on. That's pathetic. There is more, but this should suffice. After I found quite a few errors like this I just couldn't bring myself trust the other info in the book. I bought "Asvab for Dummies" and have found not one error in it.
